Selling motor cars for a living is great fun and very rewarding. You can earn loads of money as a car salesman or women, wear nice clothes, work in a warm modern environment, meet interesting people and drive fancy cars. It is many people's image of Heaven. It is the top of the food chain when it comes to consumer durables retailing. The pitfalls are that non-franchised operations can be more volatile and are entirely dependant upon vehicle sales for success. Franchised businesses; Vauxhall, Ford etc etc - make money from service and parts and warranty work as well - so they are often more resilient and do not have to rely so heavily on new vehicle sales. There is also the fact that working for a franchised dealership is normally recognised as more civilised than working from a used car sales site.
Either way, the money can be good for the right people. Salaries from at least £40,000 up to £100,000 have been quoted to us only this year by respectable and trusted owners and operators in the Motor Retail field.
It is hard to get into the business because it is a bit of a closed shop - everyone wants experienced car sales people so how do you get your first job? It is even rarer to see women selling cars - no idea why but they are totally under-represented and yet the number of women drivers and deciders has grown constantly for years.
So - how do you get in to the trade with no experience ? We will tell you later in a bit more detail about the qualities of a good car salesperson but briefly; good attitude, nice people, good work ethic, energetic, willing to learn. That's about it. You don't need to be academic although it can help later in your career. You don't have to be a Man, in fact, in our opinion; good sales women are the best - no doubt about it. What can put a dampener on things are the hours - retailing motor cars is a 7 day thing. Not that you have to work 7 days but you do have to put up with rotas across 7 days and you have to be prepared to work your share of late night openings.
Traditional motor trade recruitment agencies can only provide employers with either some other company's cast-off or an industry prima donna. Non-motor agencies can only provide candidates with the barest idea of whether they can do the job. Most certainly, these companies cannot prepare or train the candidate. This is no solution and is inevitably dangerous for the candidate.
Here at 999tom.com, we think we have an exclusive offering. We can often place completely raw recruits straight into some of the fanciest showrooms in Britain. Why? because of our contacts and because we offer comprehensive on-linecar sales training before you start. We can't offer FSA (financial services authority) compliance but that is not always necessary and is generally completed in a day once the job is taken up. What we can offer - entirely free of charge, is a comprehensive, on-line generic sales training module to turn complete raw recruits into salespeople with potential to beat the best salesperson on site in their first month of arrival - provided they stick to the rules and work closely with their sales manager.
We provide a series of text based modules with simple memory testing at each stage, complemented by audio files which can run along side or after the written course material. In order to engage as many senses as possible - we also provide a series of training short videos for each key stage - often illustrating the right and the wrong way of approaching each subject. Along side this text based course with audio and video supplements, is a number of video cuts of secret camera footage of real salespeople dealing in a real sales environment. This takes you out of the classroom environment into a real showroom with real people.
The process also leaves you, the candidate, secure in the knowledge that robust selection decisions are taken, including a full CV and personality profile, together with providing unique, dynamic and detailed pre-employment training - thus ensuring that success is almost assured. This process improves hiring decisions, reduces induction periods and candidate stress, improves team consistency and provides real career opportunities for energetic and willing new recruits - pre-trained because knowledge breeds confidence and confidence creates enthusiasm and enthusiasm sells cars. Rest assured - We can help you Fast and best of all - to you, it's all free !
